Match.com Purchases OkCupid

I learned today through Dave Evans over at Online Dating Insider that Match.com acquired OkCupid for $50 million dollars.

I for one am sad, and concerned with this news. It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of OkCupid; I’ve listed it as my top pick for both free dating sites and overall dating sites for years. Match.com on the other hand, while one of the biggest dating sites on the planet, has never impressed me much. Plus, almost a decade ago their customer service team treated me poorly, and I’ve never lost that icky feeling since. Readers seem to agree, as evidenced by the comments in several related blog posts such as Are There Fake Members Over at Match.com?

Having said that, I am happy that OkCupid received a tidy sum for their efforts throughout the years. But I’d hate to see Match.com eat up what makes OkCupid such a great dating site, and turn it into a feeder property or change it entirely. Kind of like what happened to Match.com’s freebie site, Down To Earth, which was morphed into Match.com -owned property SinglesNet in May of 2010.

What do you think? Are you worried that Match.com will ruin OkCupid, or do you feel the acquisition a great indicator of a positive future for free online dating sites?
