Love Lessons on Oprah

I found one of the greatest love stories I have ever read on the Oprah website.

In fact a book was made of it “Love in the Time of Cholera” which chronicled a 50 year love affair.

You see, when the guy, Herman was 12 years old, he found himself in a Nazi death camp. After a couple of years, he started meeting a girl standing outside the barbed wires. She fed him an apple every day for the next 7 months.

Herman was liberated by the Russian army just hours from his scheduled death in the gas chambers.

Talk about a close brush!

He immigrated to New York City and 15 years later, a friend of his set up him up on a blind date…

And 10 guesses who the girl was…

Yep. Roma, the brave girl who fed Herman the apples.

Herman, not being an idiot, proposed to her right there. And in 1996, they both appeared on The Oprah Show to talk about their love.

Herman said, “Every morning when I get up, I say, “I love you, and mean it. And not only you say, “I love you, but you mean it to.”

A while back, I noticed a pattern in the kind of gal that my brother dates. None of them are skinny. They’re not fit or in shape or anything that would be considered “ideally beautiful” in terms of body type. My brother’s not fat, so it’s not like he’s limited to BBW dating. I’m sure a typical hot chick would go for him. So one day I asked why he has a preference for big beautiful girls.

I tried to frame the question as sensitively as I could, although it turns out my apprehension was unnecessary. Instead of getting pissed off or feeling insulted, he was actually intrigued at the question. He told me he never really though about it before. “I guess we’re all just attracted to what we’re attracted to,” he said.

Feeling more comfortable than I initially was, I pressed him on it. I changed my strategy from, “Why to you have a preference for big beautiful girls?” to asking him why he’s not into skinny women.

“With a skinny gal, it’s like making love to a stick,” was what immediately came out of his mouth. It made me laugh at the time, although I felt a bit guilty later.

It’s so ironic how gals, especially young women, have this distorted belief that they have to be skinny to be beautiful. They end up starving themselves to the point that their bodies are shells of what they could be. Like Tori Amos says in her song Jackie’s Strength: “You’re only popular with anorexia. So I turn myself inside out in hope someone will see.” They’re so occupied worrying about meeting that ideal beauty that they’re blind to the fact that there are guys like my brother out there who actually have a preference for big beautiful girls. For some guys who don’t fall victim of being told what they should find attractive, thick sexy is where it’s at.
